Monetary Policy Committee keeps interest rates unchanged
The Monitory Policy Committee decided on Thursday, 22 July 2010, to keep interest rates unchanged. This means that the MPC decided to keep the repurchase
(repo) rate
at 6,5 per cent per annum, and therefore the prime lending rate will remain at 10 per cent per annum. According to the Reserve Bank's inflation targeting mandate, the main influence to the decision was the recent developments in inflation and the inflationary outlook. The governor of the SARB, Ms Gill Marcus concluded her statement, saying that the committee is aware of the fragilities and vulnerabilities in the domestic economy, driven in part by the global uncertainties. The inflationary outlook expect that the inflation rate will remain within the target levels of 3-6% in 2010, even though it is expected to be slightly higher (5,3%) by the end of the year, compared to the current levels of 4,6%.
