Malawi

January 2010:

DESCRIPTION & LOCATION: Malawi: Malawi Green Belt Presidential Programme

SUBSECTOR: Agriculture/Agri-business

STAGE IN PROJECT CYCLE: Early Implementation

CONTRACT DETAILS: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has allocated 3,2 billion Malawi Kwachas into the Malawi Green Belt Presidential Programme. The grant will be used to support relevant irrigation and farmer support Projects in districts of Nsanje, Neno, Chikwawa and Nkhotakota. The Irish government has added 683 million Kwachas towards a farm income subsidy Programme. The Norwegian government is contributing 458 million Kwachas for capacity-building. The Programme aims at irrigating farmlands 20 kilometres from the shores of Lake Malawi as well as on the banks of rivers. The intention is to reduce dependence on rain-fed water supply. The designated area extends from Karonga near the Tanzanian border to Nsanje on the Shire River near Mozambique.

VALUE/LEVEL OF FUNDING: 4,341 billion Kwachas

FINANCIAL & OTHER PARTIES: African Development Bank (AfDB). Irish and Norwegian governments.

ANCILLARY INFORMATION: Main crops for local and international consumption are rice, maize, wheat, millet, cassava, potatoes and beans. Initial studies such as a fertilizer study have been completed.
